NEW FOR THE 2012 SEASON
There are some things worth mentioning this year, that are different from previous years.
- Starting this year, we have extended the program to include youths up through Grade 11. The previous two years, we only went up to Grade 9, and the year prior to that we only went up to Grade 8. All the years before this, we only went up to Grade 6. We are able to add two more grades this year because of the gracious rescheduling of indoor soccer by VSC, changing from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, thus opening up the JW gym on Sat. mornings for more basketball. We are grateful to VSC for making these alternate plans.
- The grades 7-11 program will have two levels: the NCAA level which will be mostly grades 7-8, and the NBA level which will be mostly grades 9-11. The aim of the program is to have fair and balanced teams and fair and balanced programs at the two levels. If any grade 8 student is well skilled and advanced and wants to play UP in the NBA level, please make the request by noting it on the form. Similarly, if any grade 9 student is a bit smaller or more at a beginner level and wants to play DOWN in the NCAA level, please also make that request. Please make the request to me by noting it on the registration forms. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- The NCAA level will have one practice per week and one game on Saturdays. The NBA level will be much more competitive, but may be very limited for practices, based on availability of gym time. The NBA level will be predominantly for games on Saturdays as opposed to weekday practices.
- Remember, rec basketball is NOT available or allowed to any high school student who plays high school basketball at any level (freshman, JV, or varsity) during the 2011-12 winter season. This is a CIAC regulation, and so there are no exceptions.
- Rec basketball is available to children who play travel basketball and those on the JW school team.
- Basketball for grades 3-6 will take place on Friday nights and Sat. mornings. Basketball for grades 7-11 will take place on Saturdays, any time from Sat. morning starting at around 8:30 AM all day into the evenings.
- Boys and girls in grades 1-2 are mixed together. The instructional periods / games occur once per week, on Wednesdays from 5-6 pm for Deep River. Chester and Essex may have different times.
- Children in grades 1-2 will start instruction / games in early December.
- Starting in grade 3, boys and girls play on separate teams. For grades 3-4 and 5-6, the three towns have their own teams and will play other teams in the three towns. When possible, the grades 3-4 teams are scheduled in Chester since it has the smaller gym. When possible, grades 5-6 teams are scheduled in Deep River and Essex due to full size gyms.
- Grades 3-11 will start practices in early December. Games will start the weekend of January 6-7.
- The season will conclude in mid-March for Deep River teams, and the combined teams in grades 7-11. Chester and Essex teams may have different dates to conclude the season.
- We are always looking for coaches. If interested in coaching, please contact me and indicate which grade level, and whether for boys or girls. I have a coach application / registration form which I will forward to those interested.
We are trying to get these forms out to those that may be interested. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to those that you know that may not be on this e-mail distribution list.
Remember the deadline for registration is Nov. 11, 2011. Please have form and fee in by this date.
