Friends of the Deep River Library

Fall
2007
Thank You
A special thank you to all
residents who responded to our yearly membership and fund drive
this past spring. As of October 2007, the Friends’ has 275
donating members. If you aren’t currently a member, please
consider joining us. Our group has been able to assist the
library in adding and upgrading computers, adding a reference
service, improving lighting, conducting special programs,
providing passes to CT museums, and buying books, CD’s, and
tapes. A thriving Friends membership will help to keep the
library an active and vibrant part of our community. Membership
forms are always available at the library. We would also like
to remind residents that the donation of time is very valuable
as well. A volunteer commitment can be as little as an hour a
month! We are looking for people of all ages to assist in
various areas: book sorting, marketing, community programs,
fundraising etc. Please contact Kathy 526-3254 or Clare
526-3788 if interested.
Beaded Bookmark Sale
Did you see the beaded
bookmarks on sale at our Book & Bake Sale? They were hot
sellers and are now available throughout the year at the
library! Chris Barclay, a Friends Board member and DR resident,
is the talented artist who creates these beaded crafts. They are
available in various styles and are terrific gifts for you or
loved ones. Stop by the library desk to view the collection.
All proceeds go directly to the Friends.

If you have any questions
please see the library staff.
Book and Bake Sale a
Success
Twenty-seven years and
still going strong!!! The Deep River Friends Annual Book and
Bake Sale was another terrific success. The goal of the Sale is
to sell books and baked goods in order to raise funds for the
library. Despite cooler weather and threats of rain, we had over
1000 people visit and we raised over $4000! This money will be
used for various activities at the library such as: increasing
an up-to-date book supply, supporting programs for children,
supporting discounted (sometimes free!) passes for families to
local and other NE based museums and attractions. What else
would YOU like to see the library offer?
A special thank you goes
to those individuals and businesses in the community who donated
baked goods to the Sale. Homemade pies, granola, syrup, cookies,
brownies and breads were a culinary hit with the crowds and
added to our proceeds.
DR Books on eBay
Selling items on eBay has
taken the world by storm- now we are a part of this phenomenon!
As a way to increase profits and reach a larger market, the
Friends are selling high-value books on eBay. This experiment
has generated over $400 in sales to date. This is $400 that goes
directly to community programs at the library! To view the books
available online go to eBay.com and search for Friends of the
Deep River Library.

Own a Piece of DR History
The Friends unveiled the
2007 Deep River Christmas ornament at this years' Book & Bake
Sale. It has proven to be a top seller already! This year’s
design is of the CG-4A glider, which was produced in Deep River
for the armed services during World War II. The ornament is on
sale now at the library and will be available from Nov. - Dec.
at various local merchants.
President's Note:
form Co-Presidents Clare & Kathy
The community is a vital
aspect of our organization- a great example of this is the
turnout at our Book & Bake Sale. It was great to see so many
book-lovers under one tent! The contributions of talented bakers
and the muscle of our local Boy Scouts troop were all
appreciated. Specific talents like those of our B&B
chairperson, Madeline Romano Walsh, who devoted significant
effort and countless hours are the reason we are successful. In
order to generate more community input, the Friends’ invites you
join us at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of each month. We meet at
the Library to make plans for providing those “extras” that help
to make our Library so special. We always welcome new faces and
fresh ideas. If you can’t make it to the meeting but have
thoughts about special needs beyond normal library operations,
let us know. This is your library too- help us make it the
best!
